Underwriter

As an Underwriter, you will be responsible for reviewing applications to determine eligibilty for coverage. You will spend time reaching out to agencies in designated territories to assist with rating, underwriting, training, etc. providing excellent customer service to those agents. You willl assist with training not only to agents but also for those less experienced staff members. You are committed to cultivating and maintaining strong agency relationships.

Underwriting Responsiblities

  • Manages requests for underwriting exceptions through compromise or accommodation when possible.
  • Reviews all rating and underwriting information on application including loss history.
  • Confirms RCE information and compares to the application. Reviews the inspection report for 4 point updates if applicable.
  • Assures the risk is properly insured for value and coverages.
  • Assures the appropriate discounts and surcharges are applicable to the risk including mitigation discounts.
  • Works closely with agents in regards to any discrepancies or inconsistencies.
  • Sets a follow up for additional documentation needed on a risk and works those follow up items timely each day.
  • Makes a determination of whether or not a risk will qualify for the company’s various programs.
  • Builds a productive and positive relationship with every agent.
  • Underwriter to work with State Manager on all agency correspondence.

Processing

  • Assist agents with any guidance needed to process endorsements on policies.
  • Approves all cancellation requests and processes them according to the applicable statutes and underwriting rules.
  • Review all reinstatements and process in system. Notify agents of reinstatement.

Documentation and Correspondence

  • Review all comments and referral correspondence provided.
  • Document all pertinent comments relating to a risk each time it is handled. This is including but not limited to coverage changes, endorsement processing, rating changes, underwriting eligibility issues, etc.
  • Follow up all conversations to an agent in writing when additional action is needed on a risk.

Training

Responsible for training any less experienced staff and agents as needed and aids in the development, administration, and evaluating of training programs.

Training, Travel, Education, Certifications, and Work Experience

  • Business or finance degree preferred in relevant field or 2-3 years of property insurance underwriting experience.
  • Experience in insurance processing systems.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Periodic travel to visit agents or industry events will be required.
